News from Tongue Cottage and Special Offers
A run of fine weather – Like much of the country, Cumbria has been enjoying a long period of dry weather and this weekend is forecasted to be warm with temperatures reaching 20 degrees!! The dry, warmer weather has been ideal for the newly born lambs that we can hear in the surrounding fields. Its an absolute joy to watch them playing! The birds have also been very vocal and busy nesting. Sadly, I haven’t heard the cuckoo yet, although others in the valley have reported it. Our red squirrels are very active this year.. we have them in the tree outside the kitchen most days- only the other day, one stopped to peer in through the dining room door as I sat working! They are adorable.
The cottage has been busy with guests coming from all over the UK and abroad. We feel so fortunate to meet such lovely, interesting people who seem as passionate about walking, the Cumbrian landscape and nature as we are.
Tongue Cottage is an ideal place to visit at any time of the year, but currently its a perfect time. The roads and popular places to visit are quieter – just think of the peace and solitude you can experience on some of the fells. So good for the mind and soul!
We still have some availability in most months. Book 7 nights and get 10% off.

Dating back to 1746, Tongue Cottage is a delightful one bedroomed property in Watermillock. An area of outstanding natural beauty within the Lake District National Park we are only a mile from Ullswater. It provides a unique location for walking, honeymoons, or romantic getaways. Tongue Cottage is perfect for that special anniversary, birthday or simply for those just wanting to relax.
Located next to the owners’ home, but still maintaining solitude and privacy, Tongue Cottage is surrounded by open fields and is a haven for wildlife. Red squirrels regularly visit the gardens, as well as a huge variety of birds – including greater spotted woodpeckers, tawny and barn owls, tree creepers and nuthatches. The natural pond within the grounds regularly attracts herons and greylag geese.
There are walks directly from the doorstep, including Aira Force and Gowbarrow (Airy Crag). Little Mell Fell, one of ‘the Wainwrights’, is directly behind the cottage. Ideal for an evening walk to watch the sun set.
